Micky Barlow
Language: Kokatha
Community: McLaren Vale
My art practice is strongly connected to my grandmother, Kokatha Elder, Gladys Kite, and my connection to Kokatha cultural identity
Micky Barlow.
As part of my art practice, I make many timber homewares products, turned by a local wood turner and hand painted by with my designs. I also do ‘punu’ work – hot poker work on bowls. My style of work is quite unique, no two pieces of art are the same, and many of the timber products are sourced from timbers local to the McLaren Vale area.
I was a finalist in the Waterhouse Natural Science Art prize in 2018 and 2022, and exhibited two years running in the Brighton Sculpture Exhibition. I also featured in Roads Less Travelled and in several magazine articles.
I facilitate Dot painting classes, basket-weaving workshops and jewellery-making and corporate workshops.
My Grandmother showed me how to wood burn and weave 50 years ago; however, I forgot these skills and taught myself to wood burn, and an Aboriginal elder taught me to weave.
