ELEVATE - WEAVING WORKSHOP
Goolwa - Workshop 3
Dec 6th 2024
The 2024 Elevate workshop series was designed to build on our strong connections with independent artists across the Murraylands, Coorong, Fleurieu, and surrounding areas.
The third and final workshop focused on weaving, led by Mardawi Sister Weavers, including master weaver and Ngarrindjeri cultural leader Aunty Ellen Trevorrow, alongside Bessie Rigney. The Mardawi Sister Weavers represent three generations of weaving, with Aunty Ellen passing down her knowledge to this group.
The workshop was hosted at the Signal Point Experience Centre in Goolwa, home to the permanent exhibition Yuntulun Ku:li-war—meaning "coming together on the headland" in Ngarrindjeri. Cedric Varcoe, a cultural advisor for the exhibition, attended the workshop and led a guided tour of the interactive display. This exhibition offers a rich storytelling experience and showcases Ngarrindjeri culture through a variety of immersive experiences.
This workshop was a particularly special and intimate occasion, where many participants shared family connections or had forged lasting friendships over the course of the series. It provided an opportunity for artists to celebrate their accomplishments in 2024 and look ahead to the future.
Building on discussions from previous workshops, a helpful resource was created and shared. This included a directory of visual arts support organizations such as the Copyright Agency and Arts Law, offering guidance on artist agency and ethical practices. These resources aim to give artists the confidence and tools they need to navigate their professional journeys with tailored support.
