WALKA WALTJA NGANAMPA EXHIBITION

jamfactory

october 2023

Ku Arts delivered a series of workshops at the Iwiri Wellbeing Centre located in Port Adelaide during 2022 and 2023. These workshops brought together senior Anangu cultural leaders to share their stories inspired by homelands, culture and language with emerging Anangu artists.

Supported by multiple facilitators across a variety of mediums, artists found new ways to share and celebrate stories. These stories have been laid down through walka (marks) across canvas, textiles, and ceramics. Looking forward and back, new works recognise the roots of artistic practices and craft movements of APY Lands, from batik motifs to contemporary ceramics and distinct sgraffito motifs. The resulting exhibition of this development project was presented at the JamFactory Collect Gallery as part of Tarnanthi 2023.

The exhibition was well received, and there was exciting feedback for future opportunities. We congratulate the artists at Iwiri on such a beautiful collection of new works.
